Arthritis snapshot: Arthritis is the principal cause of physical pain and disability in the UK, affecting around 10 million people. It is an inflammatory disease, affecting joints, and causing people to suffer pain and difficulty moving around. The two of the most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
Focus on Osteoarthritis: Affecting around 8 million people and causing joint pain and stiffness. Most frequent in people over the page of 50. However, being overweight or obese also places huge stress on your knees, hips, ankles, feet and spine, and this can also lead to complications such as Osteoarthritis.
Focus on Rheumatoid Arthritis: Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation in your joints, severe pain and swelling. Usually affecting the joints and tendons of the wrists, hands or feet, it attacks the body in cycles, known as flare-ups. Most likely to develop between the ages of 30 and 50 years, and is more common amongst women.
As well as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis there are also over 200 other kinds of rheumatic diseases (this means aches and pains in joints, bones and muscles). Including;
Achilles tendonitis: Sitting at the back of the heel, the Achilles tendon joins the calf muscle to the heel bone. Suffers experience swelling, weakness and a grating sensation when moving.
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS): Causing the median nerve (controls movement) to become compressed. It causes aching, pain and a sensation of numbness in the hands, fingers or thumb.
Reactive arthritis: This is the body’s reaction to contracting an unrelated infection or virus, perhaps food poisoning, or the flu virus.
